However, whichever route you choose, it is essential that you have appropriate qualifications. That means that you must have at least level 3 NVQ in a personal training. This qualification is considered the industry standard, and permits you to register with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).
If you are unqualified, look for training providers who offer this certification - these include reputable providers who are certified by leading organizations such as City and Guilds, Active IQ, OCR, VTCT and CYQ.
Even with a qualification, you will need experience to compete for the better positions, or indeed, to have the credibility and contacts to set up as a private operator. The best way to get experience is through working in a small local gym, or with a chain such as LA Fitness or Fitness First.
