Demand for Pilates jobs has increased dramatically recently. This is now one of the most popular activities at many clubs and gym, which means that demand for instructors has also risen.
So what do you need to do to be eligible for Pilates jobs? Although there are plenty of Pilates jobs available, you need a combination of training and experience to be eligible for them.
First and foremost, you need a background in exercise, movement or a related physical therapy. This provides the basic understanding required to learn the skill. In addition, you will need to have regularly attended a Pilates class, typically for at least a year. This ensures that you understand the techniques and jargon before you start training.
Most instructors therefore have a background as a fitness instructor and are eligible for entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). If you don't have this, you will be at a disadvantage when it comes time to look for work.
As with all exercise disciplines, there are several organisations offering training. Most courses are offered part-time, and require 12 and 18 months to complete a diploma.
To secure work you will need to qualify for REPs as a level 3 instructor. The following qualifications will make you eligible:
It is therefore essential that any course you consider leads to one of these qualifications - if not, you will not be able to teach.
